Free hack to discover your biggest security risk

Free hack to discover your biggest security risk

Organizations pour hefty budgets on IT security, while overlooking an obvious risk on every workstation. Our consultant Maarten found a handy way of fixing this, quickly and without cost.

When an employee gets up to get a coffee, he leaves his PC behind unlocked, open for anyone who is in the building. Everyone occasionally forgets to lock their PC, but hackers can install malware with a simple USB stick via an employee's account.

Windows 10 has a remedy for this. You can use Bluetooth to pair your PC with another personal device (for example, a smartphone or smartwatch). This way, your PC can detect when you step away and will lock automatically.

Nobody leaves their smartphone behind unattended, do they? A smartwatch is even better. Nobody can get into the PC unnoticed to install malware.

How to do this:

  1. Pair your phone or smartwatch with your PC via Bluetooth. (Read here how).
  2. On your PC, go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign in options.
  3. Under "Dynamic lock", check "Allow Windows to detect when you’re away and automatically lock the device".
  4. Take your device with you when you step away from your desk. When you are outside the Bluetooth range, your PC will automatically lock.

NBthe Bluetooth range will differ depending on the device and battery power. A smartwatch has a smaller radius than the latest new smartphones, which can connect up to 33 m on a full charge. In our test, a smartphone worked better, with a radius of 4 m.

Microsoft has announced further Windows 10 and Office 365 security options. And thanks to our collaboration with Proximus, we can secure your business end-to-end: from your incoming network traffic to your firewall and user devices.
